Bodegas Alto Moncayo was founded in 2002 and is located in the Campo de Borja wine region of Aragon, Spain. It is a top winery co-founded by the renowned Spanish winery Bodegas Borsao and the revered Australian winemaker Chris Ringland.
The winery boasts some of Spain's finest indigenous Garnacha grapevines, planted between 1920 and 1950, with vine ages ranging from 35 to 100 years. It is one of the few wineries in Spain with such ancient vines. The terroir is distinctive, with vineyards situated at altitudes of 500 to 800 meters, red clay soils low in organic matter, rich in iron content and abundant in red slate. The region experiences ample summer rainfall and cool nighttime temperatures, resulting in slow grape ripening, extremely low yields, and wines with unique mineral notes, robust, mature tannins, and long-lasting, captivating aromas.
Bodegas Alto Moncayo has garnered numerous accolades, with each of its wines receiving high praise from the international wine community. The 2007 vintage of Alto Moncayo received a perfect 100-point rating from the "Wine Advocate" Robert Parker, making it the first wine from the region to achieve this feat. The 2009 vintage of Alto Moncayo repeated this achievement, establishing itself as a top performer in the region.
In Parker's guide, only three Spanish wines have achieved dual top ratings, with Alto Moncayo being one of them. It is a true Spanish Garnacha classic and a must-try for wine enthusiasts.
