Marqués de Murrieta

Marqués de Murrieta Winery, located in the Rioja region of Spain, stands as a shining gem in the wine industry of the area. Founded in 1852 by Luciano Francisco Ramon de Murrieta, this family-owned winery has garnered international acclaim for its deep historical roots and exceptional wine quality.

Marqués de Murrieta Winery was the first in the region to export wines to international markets and was awarded the prestigious Class One designation in Tim Atkin's Rioja Classification, symbolizing its top-tier wine quality.

The winery currently owns over 300 hectares of vineyards, meticulously cultivating various high-quality grape varieties including but not limited to Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo, Graciano, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Viura.

In its early days, the winery owner introduced Cabernet Sauvignon vines from Bordeaux, even before the Rioja DO was established, allowing wines with a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon to still earn the Rioja DOC designation.

The founder of the winery, Luciano de Murrieta, a wine master with boundless love for wine, studied in London and Bordeaux, bringing back knowledge and techniques to Rioja, laying the foundation for the winery's quality. Known for its modern style, the wines are rich and concentrated, exuding intense oak aromas.

In 1878, Luciano de Murrieta purchased the Ygay estate near Logrono to produce top-tier wines, leading to his recognition by Queen Isabella II of Spain and his ennoblement as the Marqués de Murrieta, officially naming the winery Marqués de Murrieta.

Brands under Marqués de Murrieta Winery include Marques de Murrieta, Capellania, Castillo Ygay, and Dalmau, with the Marques de Murrieta series serving as the flagship collection.

With its exceptional quality and long history, the winery has earned numerous international awards and honors, including being ennobled as a noble lineage winery by Queen Isabella II of Spain, named the "Best Global Winery of 2015," listed as a "Class One Winery of Rioja in 2017," and having wines selected as the "Top 100 Wines of the World in 2015."

Notably, Castillo Ygay is considered one of the world's most acclaimed wines, having received a perfect score of 100 points 15 times from renowned critics such as James Suckling, Robert Parker, Decanter, and Falstaff, and ranking first in the global TOP100 of 2020.
